And sometimes scaring can just be scary! But the Haunted House at APU is a fun activity focused on helping others in need. Halloween is one of the American traditions that we have spent very little time with. We focus on the Solemnity of All Saints celebrated each year on November 1st and have avoided the “trick or treat” and devilish costumes. When learning of the support for charity we made an exception. This event allows us to have fun while at the same time reaching out to those most in need.

The kids love to be scared! Even more they love to scare others. Admission to the Haunted House is free; however, patrons are encouraged to bring canned food, toiletries, unused undergarments, warm winter clothes, and or cash donations. All the donated items go directly towards two very special charities; Covenant House and Bean’s Café.

Coveant House provides shelter for thousands of homeless children throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. Founded by Rev. Bruce Ritter a Franciscan priest.

“Covenant House is dedicated to serving all God’s children with absolute respect and unconditional love … to help suffering homeless kids … and to protect and safeguard all children in need.” Last year Covenant House served 50,000 homeless kids.

Bean’s Café is another amazing organization and a favorite among our kids to volunteer their time.  The Café provides free breakfast and lunch 365 days of the year to men, women and children. They also provide social service assistance to the community.

“The underlying premise of Bean’s Café is a deep belief in the inherent dignity of every person, a belief that people respond with kindness when treated kindly, with trust when trusted, and respectfully when respected”.

The haunted house is located on the campus of Alaska Pacific University: Gould Hall, 4200 University Drive, Anchorage. The fright is open October 26th, 27th, 30th and 31st from 7:00 PM through 11:00 PM. Come join the fun and be scared for a great cause. Don’t forget your canned food or other donation! And if the haunted house is too scary please stop anyways and drop off a donation to Covenant House and Bean’s Café. Visit the APU web site for more information.
