The cabin is tucked within the thick woods leaving the north end of the lake with a feeling or wilderness. Only 65 miles north of Anchorage the area is crowded with cabins, especially in the southern half of the lake. Despite the human presence in summer, the buildings offer the only sign of humans along with an occasional snowmachine traveler. The lake system is quiet and secluded in winter. A perfect weekend getaway spot.
Reservations
Red Shirt Lake cabins are part of the Mat-Su area of the Alaska State Parks system. Specifcally, the lake falls within the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area. The Red Short Lake area currently includes four cabins. Cabin availability and rental can be found online.
Cabin supplies
Furniture at the cabin includes a fixed bunk bed with exra large bottom bed doubling as a bench, a second single bunk on an opposite wall, a plywood counter for a kitchen and two chairs. A small amount of cabin tools include two brooms, a dust pan, mop, fire extinguisher, and an ash pail/shovel. One hook is available above the kitchen if you bring a lantern. Cording across the ceiling provides an opportunity to dry out the gear. The hooks supporting the line are weak and could stand some new screw in eye bolts.
Items to share
Enough firewood should be cut and left inside the cabin and in the wood box on the deck. Be sure to bring along some of your own and or cut some down trees along the way just in case. Leave firewood behind for the next visitors.
