Remedy the oncoming stuffy noses, running noses, head aches, sore throats, coughing. All I hear are muffled coughs and people sniffing their mucus back into their noses. Gross. Everyone just seems to be so sick. So before I come down with sickness myself, I have made a remedy for fending off cold symptoms with things I could find in my kitchen. Both are kid tested with positive feedback!
Tea Tree Oil and Olive Oil
Warming 1/4 cup of oil on the wood stove, I put 10 drops of tea tree essential oil in the warm olive oil. The more tea tree, the more potent the mixture becomes. Dipping one finger into the warm oil, I put it one the temples, chest and the bottoms of the feet attached to sick children.
The oil on the temples and forehead helps headaches and head colds. It helps with congestion when put on the chest, and works much like Vicks rub does. To remedy the coughs, I rubbed it on the bottoms of their feet. Everyone’s body reacts differently, sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t. But for the small children who only had mild cold symptoms it worked wonders.
I also made Honey Lemon Cough Syrup with Coconut Oil, which didn’t taste terrific, but also didn’t taste so bad that I couldn’t drink it.
1/4 cup Raw Honey
3 Tablespoons Lemon juice
2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
Melting the coconut oil down in a pan, I added both the raw honey and lemon juice mixing well. I poured the cough syrup onto a mason jar to be kept in the fridge until needed. It can be kept in the fridge for up to two months.
Each time it is needed, it will need to be reheated because the coconut oil hardens at the top of the jar after a short time leaving the lemon juice and honey on the bottom. When ready to use, we simply warm it to the same temperature we like to drink tea and mix it well before drinking. Because everyone’s body is different, sometimes it doesn’t help with the cough. If it doesn’t help with the cough, there is no worry because the ingredients are antiviral and are still helping the body fight to be healthy.
The ingredients in this remedy poses no harm to the body and I have never had any fear of the children drinking to much like I do with cough syrups. It’s more of a tea really, and I let them drink as much as they please, especially if their throat hurts due to the coughing.
